Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, and the Stonewall Young Democrats, a national leader in youth LGBTQ advocacy, announced their endorsements for Henry Stern, Senator Fran Pavley’s choice to fill her seat when she terms out this year.

Stonewall Young Democrats President Ari Ruiz said, “Henry’s passion for equality was clear to our members—he is going to be a powerful ally in Sacramento. We’ve enjoyed our partnership with our friend, Senator Fran Pavley, and we agree with her that the best person to replace her in the Senate is Henry Stern.”

“Stern’s commitment to safer neighborhoods, schools that offer quality education and a supportive environment to all students and a greener, sustainable California will benefit the LGBT community together with all Californians,” said Equality California President Rick Zbur. “Equality California is endorsing Henry because we believe that his experience in Sacramento, his policy expertise and his commitment to social justice for the LGBT community, together with all the communities of which LGBT people are a part, will make him a strong ally in the California Senate.”

“Despite huge California victories in striking down Proposition 8 and promoting equality in our institutions and our law, daily injustices continue,” Stern said. “Thousands of LGBTQ youth in my district find themselves trapped, bullied with nowhere to turn, and suffer alarming rates of suicide and homelessness. We must keep fighting to bring a full measure of justice and compassion to those who are discriminated against because of who they are and who they love. I’m proud to be a part of that effort with the Stonewall Young Democrats and Equality California, two potent voices for progress in California.”

Democrat Stern (Canoga Park), an educator and environmental attorney, is leading the field in the 27th District, with a strong fundraising advantage, and support from prominent elected officials, business leaders, grassroots activists, and community organizations. Some of Stern’s notable recent endorsements also include the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, the Tri-Counties Central Labor Council, the California League of Conservation Voters, and the Los Angeles County Young Democrats.
